Frequently asked questions

Where do the signatures come from? Are any made up?

None are made up. Every signature is an existing image file from a published source, usually Wikimedia Commons, linked to the person through Wikidata, and each person's page links to that record so you can check it. We never draw, trace or generate a signature. Open data can still contain mistakes, such as a file attributed to the wrong person, which is why we take corrections seriously. See Sources & licensing.

Why are most of the people historical?

Signatures of people who have died, in public-domain or openly licensed files, avoid both image-copyright and right-of-publicity problems. That is why the collection is dominated by writers, artists and political figures from history.

How many signatures are there?

More than 7,000. The current total is shown in the link back to the gallery at the bottom of each person's page, and it changes as entries are added or corrected.

Can I use a signature from this site?

Each person's page shows the licence of the source file and links to it. Public-domain and CC0 files can generally be reused; Creative Commons files may require attribution or share-alike terms. Using a living person's name or signature to sell something raises separate legal issues. Always check the source file's licence; nothing on this site is legal advice.

Are the people on the site endorsing the products?

No. CelebritySignatures is not affiliated with or endorsed by any person shown or by their estates. Products only use signatures that have passed our licence and trademark checks.

How is "notability" measured?

By the number of language editions of Wikipedia with an article about the person, a neutral count anyone can verify.

What are The Signature Games?

Six short browser games: Whose Hand? (a mystery signature and four names), Who Signed This? (which artist signed a museum artwork), Match the Hand (one signature, four artworks), Early or Late? (two signatures by the same person, years apart), Date the Hand (which century a hand belongs to) and a timed Lightning Round on artists and titles.

I found a mistake. How do I report it?

Email info@designerwallcoverings.com with the page address and what looks wrong. We check against the original source and correct or remove the entry.

Where is the privacy policy?

At /privacy. It explains what we collect, how advertising and analytics cookies are used, and your choices.
